Longhorns nip Sooners in OT

AUSTIN, Texas — A career-high 37 points from senior shooting guard Aaryn Ellenberg was not enough for the Oklahoma women to avoid a second-half collapse, their second straight loss and their third overtime loss of the season Wednesday afternoon.

The Sooners committed 20 turnovers overall, but 16 of them came after intermission as a 12-point lead was eventually given away, allowing the Longhorns to get into an extra frame and eventually claim a 79-74 victory inside Frank Erwin Arena.

Once again, OU failed to execute in the end and it cost them dearly.

“We shared the ball well in the first half, and we executed and made shots,” Sooner coach Sherri Coale said. “In the second half, we started to turn the ball over, and we began to panic because we were turning it over and it started a snowball in the wrong direction.”

Still, OU led 67-62 with 1:07 remaining after a pair Ellenberg free throws.

From there, Krystle Henderson followed with a 3-pointer that was answered by a single free throw from Kaylon Williams. When GiGi Mazionyte knocked down her own 3 on the Longhorns’ next trip, it was 68-68. Neither team scored over the final 36 seconds.

In the extra frame, it was 72-72 with 1:19 remaining. The Sooners (10-6, 1-2 Big 12) had the ball with a chance to take the lead inside the final minute, but an Ellenberg turnover and a foul committed by Morgan Hook sent Brady Sanders to the free-throw line. She made them both and Texas led the rest of the way.

Sharane Campbell added 12 points and eight rebounds, but also committed nine turnovers. No other Sooner was in double figures. Center Nicole Griffin added eight points, but only a single rebound for OU, which was crushed on the boards 49-31.

Empress Davenport led Texas (11-4, 2-1) with 15 points. Mazionyte added 14. Both Imani McGee-Stafford and Henderson added 13.

The Sooners play host to Kansas State at 7 p.m. Saturday inside Lloyd Noble Center.
