Timberwolves wallop Redskins

NORMAN — For about an hour of the Norman North boys’ 3-1 victory over Tulsa Union Friday night, the Timberwolves didn’t so much appear in mid-season form, but quite possibly in state-championship form.

Their passes were on target and they were putting several of them together. Teammates knew where teammates were on the pitch. Union barely owned any possession at all.

As for the last 20 minutes, North simply seemed content to play in a more defensive stance.

The T-Wolves got on the board just 2 minutes into the game when Sage Moore was taken down in the penalty box and Mauro Cichero, after 22 goals last season, scored his first of the new season on the awarded penalty kick.

Next, Jacob Jerles, who was all over the pitch, set up Carson Cacciatore 26 minutes before the half. Just 5 minutes into the second half, Cole Johnson scored with a bending laser shot from about 28 yards away.

Union, which only finished with three shots, picked up a goal from Connor Marth, a screamer from long distance, much like Johnson’s, with 32:07 remaining.

North finished with 14 shots, nine in the first half.

Norman High boys 3, Westmoore 0: The NHS boys thought they’d left some opportunities on the field following Thursday’s 2-1 victory at Mustang. Friday against Westmoore, they created many more and cashed  in one more … even if they waited a long time for the first one to finally arrive.

The Tigers finished with 28 shots and finally put one in the back of the net when Theo Ostas scored unassisted in the 52nd minute. Ostas added another, his third of the season, 6 minutes later. Zac Terry scored in the 69th minute.

Austin Earley stopped three shots to post his first shutout.

Westmoore girls 1, Norman High 0: The NHS girls had the best of it for most of the game Friday night against Westmoore. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not find the back of the net. Though they found it four times in the shootout that was needed to decide the game, the Jaguars found it five times to claim the victory.
