OKLAHOMA CITY — Chelsea Gardner scored six of her 29 points in overtime as eighth-seeded Kansas defeated No. 9 seed Kansas State 87-84 in the opening round of the Big 12 tournament on Friday night.
Kansas (13-18) will play No. 1 seed Baylor (26-4) in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Kansas State used an 11-5 run to open overtime, taking an 84-78 lead with 2:11 to play.
Natalie Knight made two free throws, Asia Boyd converted a three-point play, and Gardner was 4 of 4 from the line to cap the scoring.
The Wildcats missed two shots and committed two turnovers down the stretch.
Gardner scored with 10 seconds to play in regulation to give Kansas a 73-71 lead.
KSU’s Breanna Lewis grabbed Leticia Romero’s blocked layup attempt and scored with a second left, sending the game to overtime tied at 73.
Breanna Lewis had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Kansas State (11-19).
Texas Tech 59
Natalie Ventress and Zahna Medly scored 18 points each as seventh-seeded TCU defeated No. 10 seed Texas Tech 75-59 in the first round of the Big 12 tournament on Friday night.
TCU (18-13) will face off against No. 7 and second-seeded West Virginia (27-3) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Horned Frogs dropped two contests against the Mountaineers in regular-season play.
The Lady Raiders (6-24) led by one point at the half and the game remained within a four-point margin until a run by TCU 9 minutes after the break.
The Horned Frogs were up by one midway through the second and exploded on a 14-0 run — holding Texas Tech scoreless for 6 minutes — to go up by 15 with just over 7 minutes to play.
Amber Battle scored 23 points to lead the Lady Raiders and Ivonne Cook-Taylor added 18 points.
