Sooners eager for Big 12 meet

NORMAN — After going through one of the toughest regular season schedules in the country, No. 3 Oklahoma is ready for the postseason to begin.

The Sooners open the postseason in Morgantown, W.Va. with the Big 12 championship meet. Under coach K.J. Kindler the program has won the conference championship six times.

“This is the most important time of the year,” Kindler said. “The important thing is that they continue to compete under that type of pressure. It’s the pressure of wanting to do so well, wanting to have the best result you can possibly have and to meet expectations.”

The Big 12 meet begins 3 p.m. today. The Sooners like how they are looking heading into the contest.

“I think we are looking really strong,” sophomore Maile’ana Kanewa said. “We are really working on the details. I think it’s going to be a really great competition.”

Oklahoma remains in the nation’s top three on every event and is currently the only program in the nation to that can make that claim. The Sooners are No. 2 on balance beam (49.440), third on vault (49.500) and floor (49.515) and tied for third on bars (49.405).

After posting her third 10.0 of the season last weekend, Haley Scaman captured sole possession of the No. 1 national ranking on floor this week with an RQS of 9.970. She is also fifth nationally on vault (9.940) and 20th on bars (9.890).

Taylor Spears joins Scaman with her own pair of top-ten national rankings. The senior is up to fourth this week on beam (9.925) and is also No. 7 on bars (9.915).

The Sooners put up many of the scores while facing some of the best teams in the country.

“I think it’s really beneficial for us to know how we stand against the tougher teams and kind of see where we are at,” Kanewa said. “I think it was really important that we did that.”
