Second-ranked Sooner men going for 20th conference championship today

NORMAN — The Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team is going for history. When it competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Championship at 6 p.m. in Colorado Springs, the Sooners will be seeking their 20th conference title.

“It’s been marked on the calendar since the start of the season,” OU coach Mark Williams said. “The regular season has been successful, but history will evaluate the team by the championships it has earned. This is the first opportunity for us to add to that history and recognize that this is a championship team.”

The Sooners enter the postseason as the No. 2 ranked team in the country and holds a 15-1 record.

“Our team is looking great,” sophomore Alec Robin. “We are probably the most prepared team out there. We are all feeling really confident for this weekend. We just need to do the same things we’ve been practicing.”

OU’s closest win in the regular season was a 432.100-431.250 triumph on the road against Michigan. The upset win was close, and proves that every 10th of a point matters. In the postseason, every point is magnified.

“The season kind of flew right by,” Robins said. “We all kind feel it in the pit of our stomachs. It’s growing bigger and bigger as we get closer to conference and national championships. It’s really exciting. You can see it in everyone in the gym. We’ are all pushing a little bit harder. The end is in sight.”
