Local teams in the hunt

NORMAN — The softball and volleyball postseasons are here, and a number of Transcript-area teams have a shot at advancing.

The first is the Washington softball team. The Warriors (17-8) are ranked No. 3 in Class 3A and have advanced to the state tournament, where they’ll try to pull past top-ranked Sequoyah-Tahlequah (25-6) to take down the title. With second-ranked Sulphur already out of the picture, Washington’s title hopes are alive and well.

The Warriors wouldn’t meet Sequoyah-Tahlequah until the state championship if both teams advance that far. To do that, The Warriors must first get past ninth-ranked Meeker (20-13), who they will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at the state tournament site in Shawnee. With a win, Washington will move on to face either No. 4 Marlow (19-4) or No. 7 Davis (22-7) in the state semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday. The title game is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Also released are the regional pairings for Class 6A, and games will begin on Wednesday rather than Thursday as originally scheduled.

Moore, along with Southmoore and Westmoore, are favorites to advance to the state tournament and compete for a state title, but both Norman High and Norman North are in a position to make a run.

For the Tigers, that will mean advancing past the Lions. NHS (13-16) opens regional play against Putnam City (19-11) at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Moore, while the Lions (28-3) were awarded one of the tournament’s top seeds and will meet US Grant (1-16) at noon on their home field.

Southmoore (25-3) also will host a regional, meeting Putnam City West (1-24) at noon. Also in the regional are Edmond Santa Fe and Putnam City North. Westmoore (26-8) earned the toughest draw, traveling to Jenks to compete with Midwest City and Bartlesville alongside the Trojans.

Norman North (12-16) is also traveling, heading to Edmond Memorial, where the Timberwolves will meet Mustang (19-9) at 2 p.m. while Lawton Eisenhower battles the host school.
