Cyclones smash Sooners on the pitch

NORMAN — Another game, another loss.

That’s how it’s been for Oklahoma soccer since Big 12 Conference play began and Sunday afternoon, even in the friendly confines of John Crain Field, the Sooners offered little challenge to Iowa State, falling 4-1.

For OU (3-10-1, 0-4-0), it was a seventh straight game without a victory, going back to a 4-0 triumph over Texas State on Sept. 1, and the program’s fourth straight loss, all to conference competition.

The Sooners tied Utah 1-1 Sept. 22.

OU coach Matt Potter addressed the squad’s struggles.

“Results aside, we have made steady progress as a team,” Potter said. “Today we did not meet the standards and expectations we set for ourselves in any aspect. As head coach, that falls on me and I will ask myself the appropriate questions.”

The Cyclones owned the game from the start, taking an 11-3 shot advantage in the first half, even as earned them just a 1-0 advantage on Koree Willer’s tally in the 25th minute.

Willer assisted Emily Goldstein to give Iowa State a 2-1 advantage in the 57th minute, though OU got right back in the game 7 minutes later when Abby Hodgen scored directly off a corner kick. However, two more goals from Goldstein, who finished her hat trick in the 80th minute, iced the game the Cyclones.

“Credit Iowa State with the game plan and for the win,” Potter said. “They competed and took advantage of their opportunities.”

The Cyclones finished with a 20-11 shot advantage. Iowa State keeper Maddie Jobe made five saves.

Sooner keeper Kassidie Stade made six.

The Sooners will try again to nab their first conference win of the season at 7 p.m. Friday at TCU.
