NORMAN — After dominant wins on the road to start the season, the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team returns to Norman for its first home meet of the season. The third-ranked Sooners (2-0) will face No. 15 Denver at 7 p.m. today at Lloyd Noble Center.
“I think we looked great,” sophomore Erica Brewer said. “We had a few obstacles. We overcame them. I feel like our teamwork is just awesome and we are very cohesive. I feel like that helps us a lot.”
Against Arizona State, Brewer won the all-around title at after an injury kept her out in the opener at Georgia. For their performances, Brewer earned Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and senior Brie Olson was named Co-Big 12 Specialist of the Week.
In the national individual rankings, Brewer’s 9.925 average on beam is ranked No. 2. She is also No. 9 in the all-around. It’s the type of start the Louisville, Ky. native wanted to have this year.
“I just wanted to improve all over,” Brewer said, “making sure I was confident in what I was doing and just showing everything I was capable of doing.”
As a team, Oklahoma’s 3.075 margin of victory over ASU was its largest in a dual road meet since a 7.575 margin of victory at TWU on Jan. 17, 2009. It enabled them to move up one spot from their preseason ranking of No. 4.
“We want to get to a place where everything feels really comfortable and falls into line well,” OU coach K.J. Kindler said. “We nailed some really good landings, especially at the beginning of the lineup. I thought the bar lineup overall did a nice job making adjustments and really going after it and being aggressive.”
Now with a chance to showcase their skills in front of their home crowd for the first time, the Sooners are looking forward to putting on a good show.
“To start it off right, we all just have to do what we love,” Brewer said. “Do what we do inside of the gym and that will show at this meet.”
