BLACKSBURG, Va. — At least Oklahoma’s matmen should be better for the experience.

For the second time in three days, the 16th-ranked Sooner wrestling team walked out of an opponent’s gym on the short end of the stick Sunday afternoon.

Friday, it was 14th ranked Lehigh that got the best of OU. Sunday, by a 22-19 count, it was No. 9 Virginia Tech that pinned down the Sooners.

In 10 bouts, OU picked up four victories, though it might have been enough after getting bonus points in three of the four.

At 133 pounds, ninth-ranked Cody Brewer picked up a major decision, 12-4, over No. 10 Erik Spjut. At 141, No. 1 Kendric Maple pinned Michael Gowen in 2:59 to remain unbeaten (21-0) this season. And, at heavyweight, Keldrick Hall put David Marone’s shoulders to the mat in only 44 seconds. Still, the Hokies grabbed victory by earning two major decisions and a technical fall along the way. They also got the best of it in more of the

narrow bouts.

OU’s Bubby Graham, fourth-ranked at 165, wrestled up at 174 and grabbed a 3-2 victory over Austin Gabel. But at 149, Virgina Tech’s sixth-ranked Nick Brascetta stopped ninth-ranked Matt Lester 6-4, and at 157 it was seventh-raked Jesse Dong of Virginia Tech stopping No. 18 Matt Lester 2-0.

At the time of Graham’s victory, after the 174 bout, OU had closed the gap to 14-13. Virginia Tech responded with major decisions at both 184 and 197.

The Sooners’ dual record fell to 6-6. Virginia Tech moved to 13-2.

It doesn’t get any easier for OU, which next meets No. 5 Missouri at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Columbia.
