Tournament brawl exposes inexperienced North roster to blowout loss

NORMAN — Despite all the drama surrounding the Norman North baseball program, the Timberwolves still had to take the field Monday to take on Lawton in a district game. And, due to OSSAA rules, they had to do it without a number of underclassmen, which allowed Lawton to win 20-11 in a shootout.

North’s trip to Pensacola, Fla. last week for a tournament was marred by an ugly incident at the end of their last game against Arlington Country Day, when the Arlington Country catcher attacked a T-Wolves player at the plate, setting off a bench-clearing altercation.

OSSAA rules require any player who leaves the bench to sit out at least one game, so North was forced to play Lawton without part of its roster.

“We played with some freshmen and sophomores today, and no matter what you have to continue to play baseball,” coach Brian Aylor said. “It hurts to lose a game in district play, but we’ll continue to move forward.”

Southmoore 3, Norman High 2: Norman High dropped a close game on Monday, falling 3-2 to Southmoore.

The game was tied heading into the sixth inning, when the SaberCats added two runs. And though the Tigers put runners into scoring position in the seventh inning, they were only able to bring in one run to come up short.

Next up for NHS is a trip to Southmoore at 6 p.m. tonight to wrap up the two-game series.
