AMES, Iowa — Iowa State managed to win on Tuesday, but coach Fred Hoiberg was still disappointed.

The Cyclones trailed Yale for most of their New Year’s Day game, finally pulling away for an 80-70 victory — Iowa State’s 15th straight at Hilton Coliseum.

Hoiberg said his team — playing its first game in 13 days — lacked intensity while falling behind by as many as 12 points to the physical Bulldogs.

“You shouldn’t have to coach energy, but we’ve had to the last couple games,” Hoiberg said.

Will Clyburn scored 14 of his game-high 17 points in the second half as Iowa State (10-3) survived.

His three-point play fueled a 17-5 second-half run for the Cyclones, who open Big 12 Conference play Jan. 9 at sixth-ranked Kansas.

“We played Iowa State basketball in the second half,” said Clyburn, a senior who added six rebounds and four assists. “We played together. The first half, it wasn’t us.”
