Tigers can’t stop Memorial

NORMAN — For at least one half, Norman High gave No. 2 Edmond Memorial everything it could handle. The Tigers fell behind early but responded with improved defense on Edmond Memorial’s stars Shaquille Morris and Jordan Woodard, and played neck and neck with the Bulldogs.

But the third quarter belonged to Edmond Memorial and Morris, when the Wichita State signee showed why he is one of, if not the, top prospect in the state. The big man scored 10 straight points, with six of them coming on dunks, to turn a 34-32 game in a 12-point Bulldog lead.

That was more than enough of a cushion for Edmond Memorial, which went on to secure the 73-59 victory in a game that was more competitive than what some expected.

NHS wasn’t able to completely stop Morris, who finished with 12 points, but the Tigers were able to frustrate him and keep him in foul trouble throughout the game. That allowed NHS (8-12) to go basket-for-basket with Edmond Memorial (17-2) in the first half and stay within striking distance late before the Bulldogs pulled away in the final minute.

Next up for NHS is a home game Class 5A’s 10th-ranked Del City at 7:45 p.m. Friday at home.

Norman North girls 51, Westmoore 41: Norman North cruised to its second straight win on Tuesday, following up Friday’s victory over Moore with a 10-point win over Westmoore on Tuesday.

The T-Wolves played lackluster defense in the first half, but stepped it up in the third quarter to take control of the game, with Bri Kuestersteffen leading the way with 20 points and Haley Woodard adding 12. The two-game winning streak comes after eighth-ranked North dropped three straight for the first time this season. Tuesday’s win was an important step for the Timberwolves, who hope to build some momentum heading into the postseason.
