NHS beats Bixby in shootout

MUSTANG — Norman High is still perfect, though the Tigers may be getting tired of so many tight squeezes.

The NHS boys opened up play at the Bronco Cup Thursday against Bixby and came away a 2-1 winner via a shootout.

The win moved the third-ranked Tigers to 4-0 on the season. Two of those wins have been by a single goal, and the last two, over Norman North and Thursday, have both come via a penalty kick round.

“We missed one and they missed one,” NHS coach Gordon Drummond said, explaining the shootout, “but Andrew (Arledge) got a save and they didn’t.”

Arledge is on a roll. Against Norman North, his two saves were the difference in the game.

Drummond was of two minds about his team’s performance. They struggled in regulation but pulled it together in the extra frame.

“We played like we were still on spring break,” Drummond said. “But what was so impressive was the composure to win the shootout. That was a tense moment, so it says a lot to be able to come through that.”

Matt Hockett scored the Tigers’ only goal in regulation, putting NHS up 1-0 in the 56th minute off an assist from Jorge Briones. Only 3 minutes later, the Spartans put one past Arledge and the game was tied.

The Tigers get back on the field at 8 tonight against Class 5A Guymon, which only had to drive 260 miles from the Panhandle to make the trip to Mustang.

It will be the first meeting between the two programs.
