NORMAN — Rained out baseball and soccer games at Norman North, originally scheduled for Tuesday, have been rescheduled, with North’s baseball game at Southmoore moved to April 12 and home soccer games against U.S. Grant moved to Monday.
The make-up dates are the first for a number of events that coaches and administrators at North and Norman High are working toward rescheduling after heavy thunderstorms moved through the area on Tuesday and canceled a number of sporting events.
Among the events lost were soccer, baseball, softball games and a track meet. The Mid-State Conference tennis tournament was also a casualty of the elements.
The conference tourney, which was supposed to take place in Oklahoma City, may not be rescheduled.
Coordinating 16 team schedules in the middle of the season may prove to be too much of a hurdle, NHS coach Kelly Stout said.
“It will be a miracle if they find a way to replay it,” he said. “Everyone already has their schedules set and there are rules about how many days of school the kids can miss.”
The tournament, while a factor in regional state tournament seeding, is not required for postseason tournaments to go on as planned.
District baseball games, on the other hand, must be made up because final standings are used for playoff seedings.
NHS baseball coach Pete Sangirardi, whose team also had a Monday game against Putnam City North postponed, said his program is looking at several possible dates.
“We’re looking at April 26 for one of them, and maybe a tournament game where we play each other for the other one,” he said. “This year we aren’t allowed to play make-up games on Wednesdays due to scheduling rules, but we have to find a way to get those games in.”
Athletic coordinators at both NHS and North said they are trying to reschedule as many of the lost games as they can, which also included a number of freshman and junior varsity events.
