Ellenberg named to all-conference 1st team

NORMAN — Five Sooners picked up awards Thursday when Big 12 women’s basketball postseason honors were handed out.

Leading the way on the first team was junior shooting guard Aaryn Ellenberg, who finished the regular season as the conference’s third leading scorer at exactly 19 points per outing. Ellenberg also broke her own school record, draining 98 3-pointers with the chance to add to it at the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments.

Senior forward Joanna McFarland was a second-team choice after averaging 9.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, both numbers bettering her previous bests by a wide margin.

Junior point guard Morgan Hook (10.6 ppg, 5.2 apt) and junior center Nicole Griffin (11.8 ppg, 5 rpg) both received honorable mention selections.

Also, in a bit of a stunner, junior college transfer Portia Durrett was named co-newcomer of the year in the conference after averaging 3.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 10 minutes on the floor per contest. Durrett shares the award with Texas Tech’s Jackie Patterson.

In no surprise at all, Baylor’s Brittney Griner and Lady Bears coach Kim Mulkey were named player of the year and coach of the year.

The awards were voted upon by the league’s coaches.

The Sooners open conference tournament play at 8:30 p.m. Saturday inside American Airlines Center in Dallas.
