Kenney continues impressive camp

JUCO transfer’s athletic ability is hard to miss

Oklahoma has reached the midway point in preseason practice. Classes start in a week and time is running out for newcomers to prove to coaches they belong on the field this season.

However, the Sooner coaching staff and players have been raving about their first-year players throughout preseason camp.

The one who has drawn the most attention is junior college transfer Cameron Kenney. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound receiver was getting reps with the first-team offense during OU’s open practice Thursday and receivers coach Jay Norvell said Kenney has made a positive impression.

“Cam (Kenney) has been working some with the ones and he’s done a good job,” Norvell said. “He’s still trying to catch on. It’s like playing in a tornado out there in the no-huddle. But, he’s done a really good job.”

Even if Kenney isn’t able to break into the starting rotation, OU coach Bob Stoops has seen enough to believe he could play a significant role on special teams. He’s also a more than capable punter.

Kenney worked alongside Tress Way during the open workout and Stoops believes Kenney’s athletic ability will make him a factor at the position.

“It’s pretty rare these days,” Stoops said. “You don’t see a lot of wide receivers that are punting the ball 40 yards down field.”

Fans get a second preseason look at the Sooners at 6 p.m. today at OU Rugby Fields. The first hour of the team’s practice will be open to the public.
