Prep standout commits to Sooners

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Oklahoma baseball received a tremendous commitment Tuesday, though there’s a decent chance the young player offering his commitment will never don the crimson and cream.

By some counts, Leedey’s Drew Ward, a shortstop, is the nation’s top junior class baseball prospect. And Tuesday, a press release sent to media members from Ward’s uncle, Mark Ward, himself a former Sooner, announced that Drew Ward had completed course work that would allow him to graduate from high school a year early, enter Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player draft and, Wednesday afternoon, inside the Leedey gymnasium, sign to play his college baseball for the Sooners.

In October, following the fall baseball season, Ward told the Daily Elk Citian, “I wouldn’t mind just going into the draft, but college is a priority for me.”

That may sound hopeful for Sooner fans, but Ward would likely have to turn down a great deal of guaranteed money to accept a scholarship from OU.
