Tourney interest on an upswing

NORMAN — Walk into the clubhouse at Westwood Park Golf Course and, even though it’s all pretty relaxed, it’s a bustle of activity.

Planks that will soon be filled in with names and scores and headed to the scoreboard south of the clubhouse line the wall of the snack bar.

Behind the counter are several faces, all seemingly doing … something.

The 39th annual OklahomaTickets.com Westwood Invitational begins Friday and things are moving. Also, it’s looking like it might be a bigger and better tournament that its most recent incarnations.

Long the largest stroke-play event in the state, it’s been quite a while since the field hovered around 150 golfers, but Wednesday afternoon the number was 147 with the possibility of more.

Though the deadline to enter has passed, there are still some groups short a player here and there on the list of working tee times.

Also, if it’s been a few years since the tourney had that kind of participation, it’s been much longer since the Championship Flight counted 33 golfers, which was Wednesday afternoon’s working number.

Though Michael Gellerman, the defending champion who played No. 1 for Oklahoma this past spring, is not back to defend his crown, several other familiar names are.

Kelsey Cline, the former OU standout who finished third a year ago, but won the event in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012, is back in the field. So is J.R. Hurley, the Norman North grad who’s been chasing his golfing dream on the Adams Pro Tour. So is Max Showalter, long a challenger at Westwood, who’s also been playing the Adams Tour.

Also entered is ex- North standout and current assistant pro at The Trails, Brandon Blevins. As is Jett Johnson, another former North standout, who’s playing his college golf right at Oklahoma City University. Another Championship Flight entry is Kirk Maynard, a qualifier for the 2012 U.S. Senior Open.
