Westmoore earns passing grade

NORMAN — Even though football season doesn’t begin until late August, Westmoore has been sending out messages to the rest of the state during 7-on-7 passing tournaments.

They include Westmoore winning its own tournament Saturday against a field comprised of teams from around the state.

“Overall we did good,” senior Dahu Green said. “Played well against adversity. We flew around. Defense flew around. Offense caught balls, balls that shouldn’t have been caught. We did real well.”

Passing league teams are made up only of quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends on offense and linebackers and defensive backs on defense. No running plays, no special teams and no pads. Basically touch football with a purpose.

That fits perfectly into the talent the Jaguars have amassed for the upcoming season. With at least three receivers with D-I potential and a veteran quarterback, Westmoore has been impressing on-lookers throughout the summer.

“We have weapons,” said Green, who has committed to Louisville “Stephan (Robinson), DeShawn (Lookout). We have kids that switch out on the other side and they can all grabb the ball out of the air. We have people you can sling the ball to.”

During its tournament run Saturday, the Jaguars seemed to score at will. Whether it was acrobatic catches in mid air by Green or Lookout streaking down the middle of the field, defense had a difficult time slowing them down.

That has become even more difficult with the addition of Robinson to the offense. The speedy slot receiver /cornerback transferred from Moore High and has opened up what was already a potent aerial attack.

In the championship game against Lincoln Christian, quarterback Bryson Lee hit Robinson for several scores in the 40-13 victory.

“Me coming in and doing what I did is great,” Robinson said. “Moving forward, hopefully I can do the same thing, help us win games and hopefully go to the championship.”
