NORMAN — Oklahoma’s Michael Gellerman reached quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships with a pair of wins Thursday.
Gellerman started the day with a 4-and-3 victory over Patrick Beyhan and capped the afternoon with a 3-and-2 win over Jon Veneziano at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.
“It was a fun day, but it was also very intense. It was a grind all day long for me,” Gellerman said.
Gellerman, a native of Newton, Kan., grew up about an hour from the course and was only Kansan in the 156-player field.
“It’s nice to play close to home because it gives me some sort of comfort,” he said. “It’s great to sleep in my own bed and eat my momma’s cooking.”
With the field paired down to the final eight players, Gellerman will face Robert Geibel when the quarterfinals begin at 7 a.m. today. The winners of the quarterfinal matches will advance to this afternoon’s semifinals.
The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Saturday.
