NORMAN — It was no surprise Oklahoma offensive lineman Gabe Ikard and cornerback Aaron Colvin were named to the 2013 preseason all-Big 12 team Wednesday. Both were first-team selections last season and both have been named to All-American teams over the last month.
However, they were the only Sooner players named to the 26-player team. That marked the lowest total since 1999.
Colvin led OU with 11 pass breakups, finished second on the squad with four interceptions and was third on the team with 61 tackles (47 solo). The senior from Owasso has played in 39 career games (26 starts) with the Sooners. He opened all 13 games at cornerback for OU in 2012 after starting 12 games at safety in 2011. He owns 179 career tackles (126 solo), 10.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and 20 pass breakups.
Ikard, also a senior, has played in 39 games (37 starts) on the offensive line. A two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, Ikard earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America First Team in 2012 and was also a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy. Ikard graduated this month with a 4.0 cumulative GPA in multidisciplinary studies and is currently studying in Ireland as part of OU’s Study Abroad program.
Kansas State lead all teams with five players, while TCU, Texas and Texas Tech all had four players named to the team. Baylor and Oklahoma State each had three.
Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk was named the preseason offensive player of the year. TCU defensive end Devonte Fields took the defensive honor. West Virginia running back Charles Sims, who transferred in from Houston, was selected the preseason newcomer of the year.
