NORMAN — Defending conference champions, the Oklahoma women’s golf team is tied for fifth place after brutal conditions for Friday’s first round of the Big 12 Championships in Rhodes, Iowa.

The Sooners shot a 322 but remain only six strokes out of first place behind current leader Texas Tech. Oklahoma State was one back from the leaders with a 317.

Play was put off until the afternoon due to weather conditions. The temperature was around 20 degrees when the Sooners teed off at noon and never got above freezing. The field played in 25-mile-per-hour winds with up to 35 mph gusts.

“Today’s conditions were really tough,” said head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We’ve never played in weather this severe, but we survived a difficult day. We are a few shots back and still have 36 holes left.”

Emily Collins and Anne-Catherine Tanguay led each shot 8-over 80 to lead the Sooners and put them into a tie for ninth place.

Individually, Baylor freshman Lauren Taylor leads the medalist standings after shooting a 2-over 74 with four birdies, including three on the front nine. Ranked 59th in the nation, Taylor is trailed by Texas Tech’s Kimberly Kaufman who’s second with a score of 75. Kansas’ Yupaporn Kawinpakorn and Oklahoma State’s Julie Yang each shot 76 for a tie for third.

OU senior Taylor Schmidt and juniors Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Kaitlyn Rohrback all recorded an 81 to join a crowd in 15th place.

Today’s second round will begin at 10:50 a.m. OU will be paired with Kansas and Iowa State.
