NHS boys put on a clinic, while North squads top U.S. Grant

NORMAN — The Norman High boys continue to play terrific defense and did again Tuesday night, posting their fourth straight shutout, their fifth in sixth games and their seventh of the season. But if that’s vintage Tigers, the other side of NHS’ coin is not.

Playing Southmoore Tuesday night, a quality team that entered the game with a 6-4 record, 2-2 in the District 6A-1, the Tigers dispatched the SaberCats 7-0.

“The only thing that’s typical of us is the shutouts,” NHS coach Gordon Drummond said. “We have been playing absolutely tremendous defense.”

What’s new are the goals: 19 in the Tigers’ last three games against Choctaw, Midwest City and Southmoore.

Theo Ostas netted the Tigers’ first two and finished with a hat trick, running his tally of tallies to 14 this season.

Also scoring for the Tigers were Zac Terry, Haydn Jones, Preston Thomason and Jones again.

“We have been scoring some wonderful goals,” Drummond said.

Norman North girls 10, U.S. Grant 0: It took less than a minute of second-half play for the Timberwolves to put the mercy rule on the Generals.

Yet, if that wasn’t so unexpected, who scored North’s final goal might have been: Kali Newman, who’s usually in goal, but began the second half atop the T-Wolves’ formation.

Luka Joyner led North, finishing with a hat trick and two assists. Bri Kuestersteffen and Yazmeen Ryan both added two goals. Mackenzie Marquardt, Kristin Wilpitz and Lexi Carroll each scored once.

Norman North boys 3, U.S. Grant 0: The Timberwolves remained unbeaten in district behind a quick-strike offense that showed up for a second straight game.

At Edmond Santa Fe last week, the T-Wolves were living dangerously, up 1-0 with about 2 minutes to play. North ended up winning that game 4-0. Against the Generals, North failed to score in the first half, yet had bagged all of its goals — two from Jacob Jerles and one from Mauro Chichero — in the space of 3 minutes and before 5 minutes had elapsed in the half.

“We scoring difficult ones,” North coach Geo Claros said, “but the ones that should be easy, we’re missing.”
