Sooners continue winning streak on the diamond

NORMAN — After an up-and-down weekend against Texas that ultimately ended on a high note with the Sooners winning two of three, Oklahoma continued its streak on Tuesday.

The twelfth-ranked Sooners rolled to a 8-0, five-inning victory over Central Arkansas at Marita Hynes Field, thanks in large part to a six-run third inning.

Shelby Pendley provided the exclamation point with a grand slam in the inning, her 13th home run of the season and third career grand slam. It was the 53rd home run of her career. The Sooners also added runs in the inning thanks to an RBI single by Whitney Ellis and a squeeze bunt by Erin Miller.

Three Sooners had two hits on the day. Alongside Ellis’ 2-for-3 performance Brittany Williams and Kady Self each collected two hits in the win.

After ace Kelsey Stevens started three games in a row against Texas, Georgia Casey earned the start against Central Arkansas (20-30) and delivered in her eighth start of the season. She improved to 3-2 on the season by striking out two and allowing three hits in three innings. Pendley entered in relief and struck out a career-high five batters in the appearance.

OU moved to 35-10 on the season with the win in the first of six straight non-conference games. The Sooners will play North Texas at 6 p.m. tonight at Marita Hynes Field before playing host to UAB in a three-game set this weekend. They’ll finish the run with a trip to Arkansas on April 30 before hosting Texas Tech in their final three-game series in conference play.

The Sooners hold a one-game lead in the loss column over Texas in the Big 12 race, and also own the tiebreaker. With five conference games remaining, the Sooners can secure the title by going 4-1 even if Texas wins out.
