Tigers split district set with Moore

NORMAN — The Norman High girls outpossessed Moore and outshot Moore but couldn’t outscore Moore in a Friday night loss. The Lions held off the Tigers 1-0 after netting the game’s only goal in the 55th minute.

“We definitely had more opportunities we just couldn’t score,” said NHS coach Tyler Hardage. “We controlled the game we possessed the ball better we just couldn’t score.”

Kay Woodring put in the game-winner off an assist by Jordan Cleveland. Moore keeper Chloe Hull had six saves in her shutout performance. The Tigers split keeper duties with Hannah Moore collecting two saves, and Brennan Hockett adding one.

The Tigers outshot the Lions 8-4, but couldn’t break through for a win that may have improved district seeding. Norman High (4-8) will enter Tuesday’s home game against Edmond Santa Fe with a 4-2 district record.

“I think the team has come a long way,” said Hardage. “I think we’ve faced a lot of challenges, including injury, but overall I think the team has come a long way from where we started.”

Boys, NHS 4, Moore 2: The NHS boys put a lot of shots on goal, managed to get four in and kept Moore at bay most of the night for a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

“We had more shots than we can possibly count,” said NHS coach Gordon Drummond. “Either we hit the keeper, the keeper made a great save or we missed the goal. We moved it well, it looked like we were going to score a bunch but nothing happened. Still, it was a good night.”

Matt Hockett scored two goals, Travis Craine had a goal and an assist and Josh Yarborough found the back of the net for the Tigers.

The win moved the Tigers to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the district. The win set up a huge game Tuesday against Santa Fe.
