NORMAN — The Norman High girls are a great comeback story and if they can beat Bishop McGuinness tonight you have to give them a chance Friday at Norman North because anything can happen at a Crosstown Clash, and if they can win that, well … that’s why Cinderella became a term associated less with fairy tales and more with sports.
Yet, the other three?
The Norman North boys, the Norman High boys and the Norman North girls?
They need no Cinderella story. Each is the real deal and each has every reason to believe this is its season.
It can’t be both the male Tigers and T-Wolves because they’ll meet each other Friday at Norman North if both win tonight. Yet both have reason to believe they’ll prevail tonight and Friday.
The North girls are right were they were at the beginning of the season. Then, the storyline was ‘If not now, when?’ and so it remains. They have won a second district championship and have looked a whole lot more like the team they were supposed to be the second half of the season than the team that dropped a couple early-season games.
Tonight’s slate is simple and simultaneous. Four games at two sites.
At NHS, the Tiger girls (5-8, 5-2 District 6A-1) meet McGuinness (10-3, 5-2 District 6A-2) at 6 p.m., while the fifth-ranked Tiger boys (10-3, 6-1 District 6A-1) meet Westmoore (5-8, 5-2 District 6A-2) at 8.
At North, the second-ranked T-Wolves girls (11-2, 7-0 District 6A-2) play host to Southmoore (6-5, 4-3 District 6A-1) at 6, while the second-ranked T-Wolves boys (13-0, 7-0 District 6A-2) welcome the Southmoore boys (8-5, 4-3 District 6A-1) at 8.
Perhaps there were seasons when the NHS girls were a dominant program that both the Tigers and T-Wolves boys figured it was their year. Nonetheless, it feels unprecedented.
The North boys are unbeaten, have spent time at No. 1, their best player, Mauro Cichero, is one of the nation’s best players with or without his viral bicycle kick video. Also, and this is always nice to have in your pocket, they’ve won two of the last four Class 6A state titles and played for it only last season.
