NORMAN — Norman North entered the Class 6A state tournament at Karsten Creek in Stillwater with a goal of defeating one of the three Edmond schools the Timberwolves have been chasing all season.

One day in, and the T-Wolves are one round away from making that a reality.

Norman North fired a 321-316-637 on Monday, good enough to place in fourth place, 40 strokes behind leader Edmond North but four strokes ahead of Owasso and six ahead of Edmond Santa Fe.

Thomas Johnson led the way for North, shooting a 75-74-149 to finish five strikes over par and tied for second place with four other golfers. Edmond North’s Hayden Wood led the field with a 147 through the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament. North’s next-highest placer was Thomas Ludwig, who shot a 160 Monday.

“We’re in a pretty good position right now,” coach Dennis Etter said after the T-Wolves wrapped up their second round.

Norman High’s lone competitor Turner Howe fired a 163, following up a 87 in the first round with a much-improved 76 in the second. Coach Bruce Renfroe said that while Howe’s first round wasn’t his best, he made a big turnaround before the day ended.

“We talked about how even shooting a 87-76 is a lot better than a 76-87,” Renfroe said. “He was really happy with the comeback. I don’t think he was nervous, but I think he was anxious to do well.”

Two other area teams, Moore and Southmoore, were both also in the field. Southmoore shot a 321-334-655 to head into day two in seventh place, while Moore fired a 345-351-696. The tournament wraps up today with a final round.
