Johnson leads locals at Kickingbird

EDMOND — At the Oklahoma Golf Association’s Junior Boys and Girls Championship, Norman North’s Thomas Johnson leads a contingent of several Norman juniors after the first day of stroke play qualifying.

Johnson shot 3-under-par 67 and trails only Laverne’s Mason Overstreet, who shot 64.

Owen Asher and Connor Mears, also of Norman, are tied in 11th place after shooting 67.

The top 16 after today’s qualifying round begin match play competition Wednesday, with a state champion scheduled to be crowned Thursday.

Also from Norman, Keaton Divelbiss is tied for 23rd after opening with a 75. Austin Hunter is tied for 37th after shooting 77 and Parker Milligan is tied in 41st place after carding a 78.

Norman’s Ryan Trousdale and Holden Young both opened in 79 and 81.

A year ago, Johnson was in 12th place after two rounds of qualifying. From there he advanced to the final four, before losing 3 and 2 to Edmond’s Hayden Wood, who went on to top Weatherford’s Quade Cummins for the title.

Johnson was the only Normanite to reach the match play last year.

He’ll be joined by Asher and Mears beginning Wednesday if each of the three can remain in the top 16.
