Match play tough on area players

EDMOND — For a little while, it all looked so promising for the Norman contingent at the Oklahoma Golf Association’s Junior Boys and Girls Championship. That, however, was Tuesday.

By the middle of the day Wednesday, all four of the hometown contingent competing for a state championship at Kickingbird Golf Club had been eliminated.

According to Kickingbird personnel, rising Norman North junior Thomas Johnson, who earned the No. 2 seed in the boys 16-18 bracket after rounds of 67 and 68 Monday and Tuesday, could not compete Wednesday morning due to illness, leaving Moore’s Lance Gregory to advance in a walkover.

Norman’s Asher Owens, who earned the No. 7 seed, struggled mightily in his opening match play round, falling to Sallisaw’s Nick Pierce 8 and 6.

Also from Norman, Connor Mears made a fine account of himself against No. 1 seed Mason Overstreet, of Laverne, but eventually succumbed after 17 holes, 2 and 1.

Not from Norman, but another Transcript-area competitor, Southmoore’s John Crawford Counts, also fell 2 and 1, to Elk City’s Logan Gore.

In the afternoon matches that whittled the field down to a final four, it was Gregory, who received the walkover past Johnson, falling to Pierce, who eliminated Owens, 1 down after 18 holes.

The match of the day was had between Weatherford’s Quinn Cummins, the defending champion, and Piedmont’s Dustin Hasley, with Cummins claiming victory, 1 up, after 24 holes.

In the boys 14-15 bracket, the only Norman player to reach the match play, Parker Milligan, the No. 12 seed, fell to Edmond’s Colter Baca 3 and 2.

With four players remaining in each bracket, morning and afternoon rounds today will determine who earns the moniker of state champion.
