T-Wolves open tourney with defeat

NORMAN — The Timberwolves endured a handful of one-point losses last season, and this year’s team got off to the same start.

Playing in the opening round of the Durant Lion Classic, North jumped out to an 18-8 halftime lead over Putnam City North, but was unable to maintain the lead throughout the game and fell 40-39 to the eighth-ranked Panthers. Bri Kuestersteffen led the T-Wolves with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Alexa Scott had seven points.

“We played really well for it being an opener against a big-time opponent,” coach Jeff Blough said. “We kind of coughed it up in the fourth quarter, which was just some inexperience on our part. Defensively, we played really well.”

The T-Wolves will face Hugo at 11 a.m. today in the second round of the tournament.

CCS boys 67, Stratford 65: CCS pulled out a late win against Stratford in the semifinals of the Big 8 Conference Tournament on Thursday.

The Royals led 32-20 after the first half, but Stratford got back into the game and then took the lead with a 24-7 third quarter that sent CCS to the fourth quarter trailing by five.

But the Royals rebounded from the deficit and pulled out a two-point victory behind Aaron Baker’s 32 points.

Blake Nelson added 10 and Alex Borgerding and Alan Casiano both chipped in eight.

The Royals will play at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

Norman High 56, Denison, Texas 36: Norman High took the opener in the Durant Lion Classic with a 56-36 victory over Denison, Texas.

It was the Tigers’ first victory of the season, and they move to 1-2 on the year. They’ll play in the semifinals of the tournament at 8:30 p.m. today against Shawnee.
