RICHMOND, Va. — VCU and coach Shaka Smart are heading to the Atlantic 10 this season with high expectations.

The Rams have good reason to be confident.

In their last game, only a missed 3-pointer kept VCU from beating Indiana in the NCAA tournament, and the Hoosiers are the No. 1 team in this year’s preseason Top 25.

Smart says just missing a return to the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 only confirmed for his players that they can compete at a higher level.

Point guard and team leader Darius Theus says the Rams know they have a lot to prove, but that their “havoc” style of pressure defense gives them the confidence that they can keep having success.

The Rams were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10.
