Not much shift in polls

(Continued)

NORMAN —

Early start: OU has never played a conference game in early September, but that’s about to change.

OU coach Bob Stoops said the reason the game was moved up was both OU and West Virginia were looking at having two off weeks in September. Moving the game to the second week solved the problem.

Still, most teams prefer to have more than one game under their belts before entering conference play.

“Both of us must have (liked the idea), otherwise why would we have moved it?” Stoops said. “For the whole schedule, it fit better.”

No calls: The Associated Press reported Monday that at least six players were ejected for “targeting” and will be suspended for the second game of the season.

No OU players were called for targeting in the opener. Therefore, no players are facing suspensions for the West Virgina game.

More catches coming: OU only completed 14 passes against Louisiana-Monroe, but offensive coordinator Josh Heupel expects that number to dramatically rise.

“We’re not going to shy away from throwing it. We need to throw it better than we did the other night, but we’re still going to put the ball up in the air,” he said. “We took a bunch of shots last week down the field. We just didn’t hit them. For us to be successful we’ve got to start doing that.”

OU quarterback Trevor Knight did throw three touchdown passes, but he only completed 11 passes on the night.
