Notepad: Taylor has surgery

EL PASO, Texas -- Oklahoma defensive tackle Adrian Taylor underwent surgery Friday morning in Oklahoma City to repair the broken left leg he suffered in the first quarter of the Sun Bowl.

OU spokesman Kenny Mossman said the surgery went "as expected."

No timeline has been give for how long Taylor, who was a sophomore this season, will need to recover. He remained at Sun Bowl Stadium Thursday and was seen heading to the team bus following the game with his lower left leg heavily braced and using crutches. He appeared to be in good spirits.

Williams' switch

All-American left tackle Trent Williams played the entire Sun Bowl at center. It was the only time in over 40 games as a Sooner he didn't play tackle.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said the senior handled it well.

"Watching it live I'd say pretty good," he said. "It was a great opportunity for him. We saw it as an opportunity and not a negative. We didn't blink and we didn't worry about it."

It could be another accolade for Williams' NFL resume. He's widely considered one of the best offensive linemen in the upcoming NFL draft. Versatility never hurts.

Clayton's plan

Keenan Clayton started just about every game the last two seasons at strong side linebacker. Thursday he played most of the game at strong safety.

The move was part of defensive coordinator Brent Venables' plan to better match up with a very brawny Stanford offense.

The idea to move Clayton to strong safety and freshman Ronnell Lewis to strong side linebacker was actually Clayton's.

"We were worried about the downhill running game and the strong safety had to be a big part of stopping that. Keenan came to me two days after it was announced we were playing Stanford and asked if he could play it," Venables said. "...I'm glad he had the premonition or whatever it was -- maybe gall -- to come and ask."
