Former Steelers coach reaches out, inspires Moore football team

MOORE — Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher paid a special visit to Moore in November. Despite currently being an NFL studio analyst for CBS, he is still a coach at heart.

After seeing the destruction of the May 20 tornado, Cowher wanted to help in some way.

The best way he could think to help was to coach a little football.

So on Nov. 20, Cowher met up with the Moore Pirates, a youth league football team. The event became part of a 5-minute segment broadcast on “The NFL Today” this past Sunday on CBS.

“When something like that happens, you are in a rush to get back to normalcy,” Pirates coach Todd Noel said. “And the most normal thing for a lot of us parents and kids who play sports year round is to get back to playing sports.”

The video showed Cowher touring areas devastated by the F5 tornado, including the spaces where Briarwood and Plaza Towers elementary schools once stood.

“I have spent the day in Moore, Oklahoma, and I could not be more impressed,” Cowher told a group of parents during the segment.

Cowher met with the Pirates at Southmoore High School and went through drills and practice with the sixth-grade team.

“To have coach Cowher, it just kind of caps off a great run and gives them something to remember for a long time,” Noel said.

Cowher, who is known around the NFL for his motivational speeches, gave the Pirates one before he left.

“You stay bonded,” Cowher told the kids. “You stay strong. You are truly an inspiration to this whole community.”
