Marley going to next level on diamond

NORMAN — Dax Marley’s baseball career will continue into college.

The Norman High senior signed today with Rio Grande, Ohio. In Marley, the NAIA school will pick up an effective bat and versatile fielder with a strong work ethic. Marley transferred into NHS his sophomore season and had to play a year of junior varsity before OSSAA rules allowed him to move to the varsity.

It was a challenge, but one that he attacked with a positive attitude, a trait that continued last season when he played first and third for the Tigers.

“There’s never been a doubt about what he wants to do and where he wants to go at the next level,” coach Pete Sangirardi said. “He seems happy with his decision and he’s excited to go play. He’s a real good kid with great work ethic.”

Kuestersteffen up for national award: Norman’s basketball teams have missed a good deal of practice in the last week due to the weather, and Norman North’s Bri Kuestersteffen will miss a few more days this week.

Not that her coaches mind, since Kuestersteffen will be in New York City to attend a ceremony where she could be awarded the Wendy’s national High School Heisman.

The senior was named the Oklahoma representative for the Wendy’s High School Heisman several weeks ago and will travel to New York City for the national award ceremony on Friday, a televised event hosted by ESPN. She is one of 12 finalists for the award.

Kuestersteffen, who led the Timberwolves to last year’s state tournament in basketball, stars on the soccer squad and is also involved in her school’s drama program. She plans on playing soccer at UAB next year.

North was awarded $2,000 for Kuestersteffen’s nomination, and will receive another $10,000 if she wins the award. She would win a championship trophy and $500 Wendy’s gift card.
