RHODES, Iowa — Oklahoma proved much better on day two of the Big 12 women’s golf tournament. The only problem? Most of the rest of the field did, too.

Though the Sooners improved 29 strokes from one round to the next at The Harvester Club, they remain saddled in fifth place with 18 holes remaining.

Fourth-ranked OU came back from an opening 322 with a second-round 293. Still, at 615, the Sooners are still 10 strokes back of leader Baylor, nine stokes back of Oklahoma State and Iowa State and three strokes back of Texas Tech

The clear favorites entering the tournament, the Sooners will have to come on very strong today if they hope to repeat as conference champions.

Anne-Catherine Tanguay showed the way Saturday, improving 10 strokes to record a second-round 70. Reigning NCAA individual champion Chirapat Jao-Javenil improved from an 81 to a 73.

What OU really needs are a few huge performances. In Friday’s first round, each Sooner shot 80 or 81. Saturday, the scores ranged from 70 to 76. A couple Sunday rounds in the 60s could go a long way.

Sooner coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell wants her team to stay the course.

“We played better today and made some putts,” she said. “It was encouraging to see our scores improve. I’m proud of the way we hung in there and we just need to stay patient tomorrow.”

Individually, Tanguay is in sixth place in the medalist standings.

Baylor’s Lauren Taylor leads at 2-under par after rounds of 74 and 68, three strokes in front of Iowa State’s s Punpaka Phuntumabamrung.

OSU’s Julie Yang is in third place at 4-over par 148. Baylor’s Hayley Davis and Texas’ Bertine Strauss are tied in fourth place at 149.

In addition to Tanguay and Jao-Javenil, Kaitlyn Rohrback followed an 81 with a 74 for OU, Emily Collins followed an 80 with a 76 and Taylor Schmidt followed an 81 with a 76.
