Sooner men join women atop national rankings

NORMAN — The Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team is used to being ranked No. 1. With eight national championships, it’s become part of the program’s tradition.

Despite that, every time the Sooners garner the top ranking, it means they are doing something right. Which is what happened Tuesday when OU moved from No. 2 to No. 1 in the newest national rankings.

OU took over the top spot a day after the Oklahoma women were also voted No. 1 in women’s gymnastics. It’s the first time the two programs have held the No. 1 ranking at the same time.

“It’s pretty significant,” OU coach Mark Williams said. “The commitment Oklahoma has made to the sport of gymnastics. It just didn’t happen yesterday. It’s a process.”

The Sooners moved into the No. 1 spot after a decisive performance at the season-opening Rocky Mountain Open. The team earned a national-best score of 443.150 Saturday in Colorado Springs, which propelled them to the top of the chart. Penn State (431.900), Stanford (431.100) and California (425.65) rounded out the top-5.

“We had a great performance,” Williams said. “I’m happy we put up a big score. We put on notice that we’re going to be a very good team and will contend throughout the season.”

OU also was voted first in the Coaches’ Poll, which was inaugurated this season. The Sooners earned 200 points, followed by Stanford (185) and Michigan (169).

The Sooners are No. 1 in multiple events in the team rankings. The Sooners have the top spots on floor, pommel horse and parallel bars. OU also is ranked second on still rings and high bar and third on vault.

In the individual event rankings, three Sooners are ranked No. 1, including junior Alec Robin on floor, junior Michael Squires on still rings and junior Sergey Resnick on parallel bars.
