Sooners sweep their way to victory in Big 12 opener

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s top-ranked women’s gymnastics team swept Iowa State in Friday’s Big 12 opener at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners carried every event and had five individual apparatus winners during the 196.675-193.050 victory.

Erica Brewer won three titles, sharing the lead on bars (9.85) with teammates Haley Scaman and Taylor Spears, while capturing the beam (9.825) and all-around. Scaman also matched Keeley Kmieciak with a 9.9 on the vault. Lara Albright led the Sooners on the floor with a 9.9.

The Sooners’ fell a point below their record-setting opening night 197.700 posted against Georgia last week.

“Tonight was a learning experience for us; a character building night,” head coach K.J. Kindler said. “There’s no reason to worry because this is a strong team and they can do it, but we are at the beginning of our season and are learning about ourselves.”

OU went up by two full points after the third rotation and sealed the win with a 49.200 on the floor.

“Last week we obviously started really strong but we also didn’t face as many challenges as we did tonight,” junior Rebecca Clark said. “We had a really smooth week last week and it was great for the team to experience that, but this week had a lot of things that we need to deal with better than we did tonight. It’s a great learning experience.”

Next is the Sooners’ first road trip of the season. They face Arizona 5 p.m. next Saturday in Tuscon, Ariz.
