Midwest City clips North girls

NORMAN — Midwest City kept hitting big shots, and Norman North kept coming back. But the T-Wolves couldn’t answer the biggest shot of the night in a top-10 showdown on Friday.

Midwest City’s Asia Davis calmly drained her third 3-pointer of the game with five seconds remaining, a shot that proved to be the difference in the Bombers’ 48-45 victory.

After Midwest City stormed back from early deficit, the game was back-and-forth the entire second half. The Bombers took a two-point lead in the game’s final minute, but North’s Bri Kuestersteffen drove to the basket and drew a foul to get to the free throw line, where she hit both shots to tie the game at 45 with a little under a minute left.

The Bombers (7-1) opted to hold for a last shot rather than go quickly, and called a timeout to draw up a play with 15 seconds left. That led to an entry pass into Jasauen Beard, who drew most of the T-Wolves in before kicking it back out. Two passes later Kerri Williams found Davis for what was the deciding shot when North failed to get off a shot in time on the other end.

It was an apt ending for a game in which North (6-2) dared the Bombers to shoot and paid for that strategy. Keyed by an impressive defensive effort by Haley Woodard on Beard, the Timberwolves held the Tulsa commit to 15 points three days after she put up 30 on Norman High. But that came at the cost of giving Midwest City open looks from beyond the arc, and the Bombers took advantage by hitting seven 3s in the game.

“The plan was to pack it in and make them shoot it tonight, and they made some shots,” coach Jeff Blough said. “I thought Haley did a good job on Beard, but she gave us some trouble when she went into the post. But I thought we played hard and played pretty well. They just hit one more shot than we did.”

The Timberwolves were at a disadvantage before the game even started. Center Julian Mougell sprained her ankle in warm-ups and was unable to even try to play. She finished the night on crutches, unable to put any weight on it, and it’s unclear how long she’ll be out, though she’s expected to miss tonight’s game against Westmoore.

Mougell’s absence forced Blough to change his rotation, and allowed Midwest City to keep a smaller lineup on the court to push the tempo. The Timberwolves got good minutes of freshman Crymson Rose in Mougell’s place, but losing the 6-3 senior changed the way the Timberwolves had to approach the Bombers just before the tip.

Kuestersteffen led North with 21 points, while Paige Canty added nine. Both Woodard and Alexa Scott were active on the boards for North, grabbing 10 and nine rebounds respectively. Beard led Midwest City with 15 points and four rebounds while Davis added 13 points.
