Tigers just one win away from dual state

NORMAN — Norman High is one step away from dual state.

The Tigers competed in two of the three duals that make up the district tournament and emerged victorious with a 47-27 victory over Edmond Santa Fe and a 37-33 win over Moore. If the Tigers can defeat Midwest City on Tuesday they’ll qualify for the program’s first dual state tournament in more than a decade.

The Tigers put themselves in that position with a dramatic victory over Moore on Tuesday. After jumping out to an early lead, Moore fought back to take a slim 33-31 lead into the final match. That put everything in the hands of Collin Kappal, and the 182-pounder came through for the Tigers at the right time, defeating his opponent to seal the win for the Tigers.

“It was an awesome surprise because he didn’t wrestle up to his abilities in the first match,” coach Bo Maynes said. “We had to win, and Collin went out and wrestled great and did that for us. We’re not in yet, and we still have to beat Midwest City. But I’m really proud of our boys. They’re working hard and smart and we’re excited to be part of it.”

While the Tigers may advance to the state tournament, the Timberwolves will watch from the sidelines after losing duals to Choctaw, Mustang and Southmoore on Tuesday. The T-Wolves fell, respectively, 41-39, 46-26 and 46-30.

While the Timberwolves couldn’t come out victorious as a team, there were several individuals whom coach Greg Henning said wrestled well on Tuesday.

Seniors Blake Bassham, Levi Berry and freshman Joseph Messer all won three matches.
