NORMAN — The Sooners are riding high after following up a clean sweep at the Kajikawa Classic last weekend with a bevy of national awards and No. 1 ranking.
Oklahoma is ranked atop the ESPN/USA Softball poll, swapping places with Alabama by a margin of just five points in the poll. It is the second time in program history the Sooners have earned the top spot, along with one week in 2007.
The good news didn’t end there. After throwing a pair of no-hitters over the weekend, senior pitcher Keilani Ricketts was named the national player of the week by both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and USA Softball, as well as being named the Big 12 pitcher of the week.
Sophomore slugger Lauren Chamberlain, who hit four home runs in five games, was named the Big 12 player of the week, the fourth time in her career she’s earned the honor. No other player has won the award more than twice in that time.
Oklahoma next takes the field on Friday for a double-header against UC Riverside and San Diego State at the Campbell/Carter Classic in San Diego, Calif.
