Not much could provide a spark

WACO, Texas —  Oklahoma did try some new wrinkles Thursday night. The one major one was adding freshman quarterback Trevor Knight to the game plan. He carried the ball five times for 17 yards.

Of course, the package — like the rest of the Sooners’ offense — experienced only mediocre success in the 41-12 loss to Baylor.

“There was a couple of things that we wanted to try to take advantage of in the run game. I thought Trevor gave us an opportunity to do a couple of different things,” OU offensive coordinator Josh Heupel said. “Obviously, it didn’t work out as well as we wanted tonight.”

The Sooners were searching for anything to help after losing fullback Trey Millard to a season-ending knee injury Oct. 26 against Texas Tech.

“As far as replacing Trey, you don’t replace a guy like him. But you saw us do a couple of different things, including playing two tailbacks in the backfield tonight and trying to replace some of what he brought,” Heupel said.

Tapper ejected: One hit OU’s defense could potentially take in next week’s game against Iowa State is the loss of defensive end Charles Tapper. He was ejected after throwing a punch at a Baylor offensive lineman in the fourth quarter.

The Big 12 Conference will decide if a further suspension is warranted. Tapper clearly threw a punch, but it didn’t come close to connecting.

Injuries pile up: Thursday night turned out to be a horrible night in terms of injuries for the Sooners. Three starters and two freshmen suffered injuries.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered what appeared to be a head injury after taking a vicious hit late in the first quarter. Safety Julian Wilson and cornerback Aaron Colvin left the field with injuries in the second half.

True freshman linebacker Jordan Evans suffered an ankle injury, and Keith Ford also suffered a leg injury and was on crutches after the game.
