GERONIMO — Two signs posted along U.S. 277 near the Comanche County town of Geronimo warn that the town is a “speed trap.”
The first went up about a week ago and reads “Police Trap Ahead.” A second reads “Next 3 Miles Police Harassment.”
Mayor Ed Mounts told KSWO that police monitor the highway — but denies it’s a speed trap and says the speed limit is 65 miles per hour.
Mounts also notes that state law prohibits cities and towns from generating more than half their revenue through traffic fines on highways. He says Geronimo has collected more than $35,000 this year on traffic fines — less than 9 percent of its total budget of about $400,000.
Mounts says he’s not concerned because he believes it’s good if drivers are slowing down.
