Not even the snow, ice and frigid weather can dampen the spirits of many Oklahoma State University students and avid basketball fans, who have tents set up outside Gallagher-Iba Arena in anticipation of Monday night’s Bedlam game against the University of Oklahoma.
Students register their tents for early admission to home games; many of the tents are registered and set up days in advance. OSU camping policy states students could begin registering to camp on Wednesday for the OU game. However, at least one of the tents has been set up since Jan. 12, before the triple overtime thriller with Texas.
“This year, we are camping out for all of them,” said Kevin Bradley, architectural engineering junior. “We got here Friday night for the Texas game (on Tuesday).”
Students are permitted to leave their tents up for the next home game, but they have to re-register. However, once the tent is registered, at least one camper needs to be present at all times to hold the position in line. Exceptions are made when OSU has another athletic contest.
“They let us go to wrestling and women’s basketball games,” said Shannon Sewell, a junior in electrical engineering technology.
Saturday, the tents were set up on the south side of Boone Pickens Stadium, which provided a break from the wind and many electrical outlets for student use. Though it was cold, space heaters, televisions, radios and other appliances make the experience more enjoyable.
“The weather has kept a lot of people away,” said Scott Baum, finance junior. “I think they are waiting for the snow to be gone.”
“This is the first time that it has snowed (while camping for a game),” added Ryan Ward, accounting junior. It was cold last year for the Bedlam game, but no snow, he recalled.
Battling the snow for days will all be worth it when registered campers are allowed entry before other students. The campers are hopeful for a front row seat before their expected victory.
“OSU is definitely going to win,” Sewell said. “They (OU) aren’t very good this year.”
Sewell and Ward predicted a 15-point Cowboy victory, while Bradley and Baum were a bit more aggressive.
“We will win by 22 or 23,” said Bradley. “We will score upward of 80 points.”
Baum predicted an 18-point victory for the Pokes.
