Teens nabbed exploding pipe bombs on video

By Caleb Soptelean

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. A video of juveniles exploding bombs could have the teen-agers in hot water.

The Midwest City Police Department is investigating after a Midwest City man seized several home-made bombs from the teens.

Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said Tuesday the man caught the juveniles exploding the incendiary devices on the banks of the South Canadian River on Jan. 25.

In addition to a video the juveniles made, Clabes said the man confronted the teens and took their bombs, a black backpack and notebook containing bomb recipes.

The explosives were made from 3-inch carbon dioxide cartridges that had been filled with gun powder, Midwest Police Capt. Sid Porter said Tuesday. The compressed air cartridges are normally used in pellet guns, he said.

Although the items were found outside Midwest City, the man brought the items to the Midwest City Police Department because that’s where he lives, Porter said. The man was in the area, saw smoke and decided to investigate.

Porter said two juveniles are suspects in the case with misdemeanor charges of possession of explosive materials likely forthcoming from the county district attorney.

Porter characterized the investigation as an isolated case, but cautioned juveniles against making bombs. “That stuff’s dangerous. You can end up hurting yourself,” he said.

The report comes on the heels of a southeast Oklahoma City man presenting the Sun photographs of pipe bombs he found on property near Choctaw.

Harold Jones said he found several pipe bombs, fuses and a clubhouse on Nov. 9 at a 5-acre property where he lives near SE 74th Street.

In addition to the bombs, Jones said he found a box of deer meat and guts along with a bullet-ridden dog.

Jones suspects the deer and dog were used in a satanic ritual.
