NORMAN — Former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., plans to visit the University of Oklahoma on Thursday to discuss the state of the nation and his recently published book, “America: Our Next Chapter.”

His informal discussion is scheduled to start 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Beaird Lounge of the Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave. A limited number of seats will be available for the public.

“Sen. Chuck Hagel was recognized as a leader on foreign policy and national security issues during his service in the U.S. Senate,” said OU President David L. Boren, also a former U.S. senator. “Having the chance to serve as a co-chair of the nonpartisan President’s Intelligence Advisory Board has only deepened my respect for his insight into the challenges the U.S. faces as we work to secure our future.”

Hagel served in the U.S. Senate from 1997 to 2009. He was a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and Intelligence committees and chaired the Foreign Relations International Economic Policy, Export and Trade Promotion Subcommittee; and the Banking Committee’s International Trade and Finance, and Securities subcommittees.

Hagel now is a distinguished professor at Georgetown University and is co-chairman of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board and the President’s China 100,000 Strong Initiative’s Advisory Committee.  He also serves on the Secretary of Defense’s Policy Board and Secretary of Energy’s Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.

The Vietnam veteran also is co-chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Corporate Council.
