NORMAN — On Thursday, victims of sexual assault will join together and prove that they are victims no more. Take Back the Night will be hosted by the Women’s Outreach Center from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Unity Garden on the University of Oklahoma campus South Oval.
Take Back the Night is designed to be a safe place for victims of sexual assault and allies for the fight against sexual violence to feel free to speak. Participants will march around Campus Corner to show that victims “will unite and take back the night” that was taken from them.
The event’s guest speaker will be Linda Terrell. Terrell is an OU alumna. She founded the first march in the early 1980s after becoming a rape victim.
Terrell’s paper, “A Descriptive Study of Rape: Is ‘Defensible Space’ A Solution?,” was published in the Journal of Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology. The paper was in her living room prepared for publication when a rapist broke into her home, and she became a statistic in her own study.
After being raped, Terrell refused to stay a victim and began a local group called Community Against Sexual Assault, spoke out on this issue across the state and began Take Back the Night.
