NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism has been designated an Apple Distinguished Program, it was announced Friday.

The presentation reflects the school’s commitment to building a strong community through technology, Dean Joe Foote made the morning announcement inside the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium.

Foote demonstrated various faculty and student-lead initiatives that make use of Apple technology.

“We cherish the partnership we have had with Apple,” he said. “Apple has helped us on our mission.”

He was joined by Apple area development manager Dr. Mark Benno, members of the college’s advisory board and OU President David L. Boren.

“It is absolutely a very distinguished class of universities that we recognize with this,” Benno said. “It became clear that what you are doing here at Gaylord College stands out.”

He called the school the “bellwether of what our technologies can do for higher education.”

Boren said only eight higher education institutions have been so honored.

“This is another important milestone in the history of this college,” Boren said.

He praised the leadership of Dean Foote and noted enrollment increases in the college, accomplishments of faculty and students and the upcoming Sooner Network announcement.

“As you can see, we’re not resting on our laurels here,” Boren said.
