NORMAN — President David L. Boren released the following statement about last Wednesday’s emergency alert on Monday.

“Today (Monday, Jan. 20), I met with leaders of the emergency response team on campus to continue our After Action Review of last Wednesday’s alert. Several items were raised and will continue to be reviewed.

1. We will continue to work with our emergency alert system to address technical issues and make sure text messages are received in a timely fashion.

2. More than 4,200 people have updated their emergency contact information with the University since last Wednesday’s incident. All members of the university community are urged to do this by logging in with their OU 4x4 at account.ou.edu.

3. Emergency law enforcement training will be intensified and we will continue to ensure members of the response teams have updated comprehensive maps of the campus for future reference.

4. Members of the community should guard against giving credibility to unsubstantiated rumors from social media and instead rely upon official communications from the university.

5. Additional online training on emergency preparedness will be available to faculty and staff this spring.

6. We will give consideration to providing more ongoing updates during an incident when they are appropriate.

“Our review of the alert and emergency response efforts will be ongoing. I want to express my personal thanks to all of those who responded so well to last Wednesday’s emergency alert, especially members of the OU and Norman police departments, the SWAT team and emergency medical personnel.

“A special thank you is also due to our students, faculty and staff who conducted themselves so well.”
