NORMAN — Community Christian School students can’t sit still in their desks any longer. They’re ready to move and are so excited that they have offered to help carry their desks into their new high school addition as soon as it’s completed.
The approximately $6.5 to $7 million project will add 33,000 square feet to the private Christian high school. Principal Barbara Ohsfeldt said administration hope to open doors to the new addition by the first week of March.
Community Christian School opened in 1986 with the mission to teach from a biblical worldview and develop well-rounded followers of Christ. Teaching preschool through 12th grade, the school began with 75 students but, over the years, has grown to 760 students.
Ohsfeldt said officials decided to make additions to the high school because growth had led to overcrowding. Currently, the school is conducting some classes in its chapel, so the addition is necessary.
“Each year, we’ve grown. This past year, we grew about 10 percent,” she said.
The new addition will create much-needed classroom space with computer labs, an art studio, a state-of-the-art science facility and a media center in which the school plans to offer a broadcasting class.
“The Lord has blessed us, and the majority of the project will be paid for by the time it opens,” Ohsfeldt said.
The addition of new classrooms, Ohsfeldt said, would not change the school’s philosophy that focuses on college prep and grounding students with God’s word. Ohsfeldt said that she thinks curriculum will be enhanced.
“Our quality of education will accelerate with the new, state-of-the-art science facility and other additions,” she said.
Community Christian’s high school is not the only building to see upgrades. The elementary playground was recently redone and Astroturf was put in place.
